Sea Scout Ship Nautilus had two amazing back to school recruiting events that resulted in NINE new Sea Scouts joining in one month.

In order to help all of our new Sea Scouts earn their first rank of Apprentice, we held a full advancement day and overnight at the Coyote Point Yacht Club.

Our adventure began with going over Vessel Safety requirements before going on a short cruise on a parent’s 47 foot trawler. All of our new Sea Scouts were able to steer the boat and enjoy time underway.

Preparing meals together is an outstanding way for new Sea Scouts to learn teamwork.

Everyone who helps with “galley duty” is given a chef’s hat (we have a variety of Toques, pill box cap, or berets), and apron, for team building and to promote food safety standards.

We enjoyed sandwiches for lunch, marinated chicken and beef with pasta for dinner, and waffles with sausage, bacon, and eggs for breakfast.

Learning the Scout Oath, Law, and Sea Promise helps define the core values of Sea Scouts. Our longer tenured Sea Scouts worked with our new Sea Scouts in learning these principles. It was impressive watching our Sea Scouts verbally practicing each of these tenants while walking around the back of the yacht club.

All Scouts who go on, and in, the water learn the Safe Swim Defense. Here are our Sea Scouts discussing each element of the Safe Swim Defense with our Boatswain.

“Service” is one of the core values of Sea Scouting. Our scouts helped move sailboats used for the yacht club’s junior sailing program, so a new storage container could be moved in for equipment storage.

A Landship Ceremony is a Sea Scouting tradition for holding weekly meetings and for awards ceremonies. Our Sea Scout learned the difference in ceremonies for recognizing advancement and for a weeknight business meeting.

New uniform t-shirts, Official Uniform Shirts, hats, belts, and jackets were provided to our new Sea Scouts. Custom name patches were ordered for the jackets. Several Sea Scouts spent their social time sewing new patches on uniforms.

Sea Scouts played board games and enjoyed popcorn after a full day of adventure and fun.

We are thrilled to have more than doubled the number of Sea Scouts in our Ship. If you have a youth interested in joining, please see our profile on BeaScout.org.
