The Sea Scout Ship Nautilus competed in the 75th Old Salts Regatta at Coast Guard Base Alameda over the weekend of May 5 to 7, 2023.
The Old Salts Regatta is the oldest competitive Sea Scout event in Northern California. Nineteen Sea Scout Ships from Santa Cruz to Sacramento participated in the event. The regatta events are all based off of Sea Scout skills to build teamwork. A few include Piloting, focused on navigation, Sailing a three legged course, knot tying, radio communications, marlinspike, and other nautical activities.
The Nautilus combined with the Sea Scout Ship Compass Rose of Petaluma and the Makai of Alameda to form a competitive team that took home two first place trophies, one in Sailing Identification (tied with one other Ship) and the other in Heaving Line. The combined team also was one of the three teams in the Regatta Relay, which is a relay race for the three crews with the top combined score in Knots, Rope Climb, Boatswain’s Chair, and Heaving Line.
The Nautilus Sea Scouts had a blast, made new friends, and had a great time playing foosball after a day of friendly competition.
